I was lucky to catch this young woman in a particularly interesting, pensive posture. Preoccupied on her mobile phone she is absorbed in the cyber reality of the internet and social media. Surrounded by multi-truths and fake news.
A post truth narrative, this 2017 work references the unfolding of 'Brexit', world economic down-turn, the American election and the advent of socially divided communities.It represents life in the digital era. The tapestry of images in the background behind the woman contrast a very different non-binary world of the 1950's and 60's. The juxtaposition of the black and white imagery of the 50's seated couple provides a stark comparison to modern life.
The use of a rough canvas with its thickly applied ground is used to expresses some of the grating issues. The mixed choice of styles in executing the painting was deliberate and seemed right to me for setting out a patchwork narrative rather than a simple linear one.
